Reporting for Duty

Reporting for Duty - Jerry Cole Elijah is an investigative journalist who is tasked with the job to shadow a detective in the hopes to better police and community relations. Only when he arrives at the station, the cops are less than friendly. Elijah finds himself being paired with a beat cop instead of a detective.

After a tragic event, Robert transferred out of narcotics to be a beat cop in another city. When no one wants a reporter shadowing them, Robert makes a deal with his chief in exchange for allowing the journalist to shadow him.

While Elijah is gay, Robert is straight. The two are very at ease with each other. There isn't exactly a spark between them. That all changes when the two spend a little time getting better acquainted. When Robert lets Elijah know the real reason he's working as a beat cop, emotions get a bit high. Elijah becomes the friendly shoulder to cry on and comforts Robert. The two fall asleep and awkwardness ensues. Then a kiss....and Robert confessing to Elijah. But Elijah has been hurt before and Roberts seem vulnerable. Add in the case that fell into their lap and a simple job/article is anything but.

A interesting read. I liked seeing the buildup in their relationship although I feel like the two were acting like emotional teens when it came to dealing with their insecurities.

The way the case with Asa was resolved I wish the author had gone into more detail. I was looking for excitement of the moment when they bust in and save the child but everything happened off page and all we get is the two observing the kid and talking about his involvement in the case. Don't get me wrong I still enjoyed it but I think a bigger impact could have been made.

An ARC was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.
