I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
In a small town a traveling circus performer chooses a tale about a blacksmith and a traveling medicine salesman as his last story of the night.
The story he chooses to relate is about a blacksmith, Jed Riker. Jed lost his wife to child birth and is caretaker to his elderly mother in law. Feeling scared and ashamed of his sinful desires for men he buys into this elixir he sees being sold by a medicine man. Instead of finding the help he seeks, he finds himself plagued with erotic dreams starring himself and the medicine man, Peter Saint. When a visit from Peter Saint alludes to Jed giving into his desires. Jed is left confused. Then Jed is surprised when Peter reveals whats he's been up and makes his proposition which Jed readily accepts.
An easy quick read. It was a bit more erotic than I thought it would be. It reads really well and it was interesting reading about how far Peter went to draw Jed's attention, how homosexuality was (and is still) viewed and dealt with. Martha and the potion, was interesting, I think it'll be interesting to see her story.
I was left wondering about what reaction were garnered by the crowd listening the circus performers story since the story just ends with Martha's new transformation. It did make me think I missing something the author was hoping readers would conclude on their own.
