This book was given to me in exchange for a honest review.
Isle of Illusions is a fantastic prequel to Pheonix Heart. The book focuses on Lorenz and Cyrus’s relationship and is a must read before starting Pheonix Heart [or prior to a revisit to Pheonix Heart]. The plot takes us to Lorenz and Cyrus going on their memorable vacation. We find out how Lorenz ended up experimenting with supernaturals, why he drinks, and why his personality is the way it is. This story really endears one to Lorenz and makes him really loveable.
On their vacation, it takes a turn for the unexpected as they encounter reports of strange corpses reminding Lorenz of some of the horrible experiments they were forced to perform on living beings. Cyrus’s role as Lorenz ‘s strong supporting humorous lover is a clear complement to Lorenz’s character. Their antics sneaking Cyrus in a coffin across different modes of transportation during the day time is if humorous note.
They end up on an asylum island where they suspect supernatural inhumane experiments were being conducted and start their investigations. Their only mode of escape is mysteriously destroyed. They experience signs of ghostly presence. They meet and discover that the mad scientist in question is a former colleague of Lorenz whom has gone off the deep end. Lorenz is the star of this novel as he gets over his anxiety and insecurities and save Cyrus.
I rate this story 4 stars as I loved how Lorenz grows in the story for this passive, alcoholic, anxious, cold scientist and we get to see how he loves his partner and will stand up for his beliefs when challenged.
