Great read
My first in the series by this author and I enjoyed it immensely. The author did a great job in tackling two tough issues/illnesses in our society: depression and suicide.
Nikolai (Nik) Müller and Glenn Kildal aren’t friends, just two people that hang out with the same crowd. Nickolas is out and proud whereas Glenn is bisexual and straight acting. He doesn’t want to even appear to be associated with anyone flamboyant.
Glenn’s been building up so many lies that he dug himself into a small hole. On a night out on town Nickolas approached and hits on him. The two have a good night. But Glenn has had it, the last straw, being rejection by the army Glenn decides to end it all but his plan doesn’t go as planned.
Nickolas had a great night with Glenn but when he can’t get a hold of him for a while he just thinks Glenn's a jerk. When Glenn pops back into his life several months later like nothings wrong, Nik doesn’t exactly take it well. When Glenn explains why; Nic is more forgiving. The two decide to resume from where they left off several months before. Both aren’t the committed relationship type but find themselves falling into a kind of companionship.
The two spend quite a bit of time together but not without danger. Glenn’s psycho brother, Marcus, is a violent homophobe. Add in Glenn’s unstable behavior and closeted behavior and the two have their work cut out for them.
I wasn’t use to this authors writing style and it did take me a chapter or two to get use to. The portrayal of Glenn as a depressed and suicidal character was transmitted well; I could feel his pain and suffering. Nik being there made a lot of difference and it was good to see him more than willing to step up and be someone Glenn could count on him. I felt like it was such a hopeful case.
I’m glad that Glenn tackled the issue with his brother, I think I would have liked a more definite ending or solution to Marcus but what occurred was good. I wouldn’t mind if the author decided to revisit these two to show how well they are five to ten years from the time in this book. I found myself getting invested in Glenn and Nik’s relationship.
